The Core English program stresses critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical capabilities. We build strong reading comprehension skills using literary texts and information from a wide range of genres.
For younger students, our program provides rigorous instruction on every reading standard in a developmentally appropriate way. Our goal is to give emergent readers greater confidence and mastery in all Common Core standards.
To do this we address the numerous components of a comprehensive Language Arts curriculum that includes reading, comprehension, grammar, mechanics and usage:
- Phonics – Phonics is the foundation of reading. It enables students to accurately sound out words they have not already memorized. We focus on letter recognition, letter formation, consonant sounds, short vowels, blends and digraphs and long vowels. Through practice and mastery of these phonics skills, students achieve the reading foundation they need to move ahead with more complex material.
- Comprehension – We put special attention to helping students learn how to derive meaning from what they are reading. This not only raises your child’s reading comprehension; it also fosters their love of reading.
- Oral Reading – Students get the opportunity to read orally on a regular basis. Through continual reading assistance our instructors help solidify accuracy, fluency and self-confidence in your child’s reading skills.
- Grammar Skills – Students learn about the structure of the English language: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, and more – all skills essential for them to know and understand for communication mastery.
- Mechanics -This subject area focuses on the conventions of punctuation and capitalization. These skills are essential to the proofreading phase of the writing process.
- Usage Skills – Instructors focus on the correct word choices for both speaking and writing. By learning the tenses of verbs, adjectives, and nouns, students can avoid errors so they become more confident and effective writers and speakers.
